One of the hidden gems for Japanese "small-eats" is the Oh Sushi! restaurant. Located in Mid-Valley, Megamall (or as our Japanese friends would call it "Mito-Valee, Mega-Moruu"), it has a very cosy atmosphere.
Before we go on, we have to say that this place serves non-halal food. So we couldn't bring our Muslim staffs to help us try out the food. However as most Japanese would tell you, pork is an essential ingredient in many Japanese dishes. So on this point alone, we were quite sure that Oh Sushi! is a Japanese restaurant which keeps to its roots. Oh Sushi! also serves Japanese-Chinese (chukoku ryori) dishes, so don't be surprised to find Chinese inspired dishes here like Mabo Tofu and char siew ramen. In fact the ramen in Oh Sushi! is also one of the nicest we had.
One of the things that will strike you about Oh Sushi! is the whole restaurant concept. You'll see a big cute caricature of a reddish-orange cat right at its main entrace. This is one version of the fortune cat which the Japanese uses to attract business. Normally such fortune cats will have one of its hand up to draw you into the shop! You will also find plenty of banners with Chinese and Japanese characters which are typical for restaurants in Japan. We prefer to sit in one of those cubicle stalls where you have quite a bit of privacy. One of the things which we like the most of Oh Sushi! is the menu. It is brightly coloured with plenty of pictures which make ordering so much fun!
During the review we had Katsudon set (RM18) (deep fried pork), Salmon-Unagi sushi bento set (RM24), Agedashi Tofu (RM8) and Tori Karage (RM9) (deep fried chicken).
The katsudon was a bit limp so it wasn't up to expectations. The set we had came with miso and salad. The chicken is crispy but the inside is moist and full of taste. One of these days we will get Japanese food expert to give you the recipe. The Agedashi Tofu is one amazing dish which we could yet to figutre out how to make. The tofu is deep fried and sits in spiced soya sauce. The skin of the tofu has a starchy layer which gives an interesting texture and taste to the dish. The sushi bento was the special of the day. For the bento set, we had one inari crab roe sushi, three unagi sushi, one tamago sushi and one salmon belly sushi together with salad and miso. Oh Sushi! is not particularly famous for its sushi but we would say that it is better than most other sushi joints in Malaysia. We had ramen in Oh Sushi! on some other occasions which we think is also quite good. Overall, we think Oh Sushi! deserves top marks.
